It was a beautiful scene at City Market last night—I wish more of you had been there to enjoy the wonderful weather (and the crowd of people who showed up, just ready to shower you with tips!). Read the rest of this entry »

Did you realize that First Friday is tomorrow night? Yep! So it’s time for all you Streetlight performers to make plans to join us (and the crowds) at City Market with tip buckets in hand!
Dan and Will will be on station as usual at the west side of Moore Square (across from Tir Na nOg) at 6:30. If you’re a first-time performer, please drop by for a short briefing. If you’ve performed with Streetlight before, we’d still enjoy seeing you, so swing by on your way to your favorite performance spot. Read the rest of this entry »

Just learned of a new Busker Movie. Let it inspire an exciting new edge in Downtown Raleigh.
If any one is going to be in LA on July 26th, it’s premiering as part of the Dances With Films Independent Film Festival.

City Market has definitely rescheduled their portion of the First Friday gallery crawl to this Friday, including having a band out on the street. Both City Market and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance are advertising this, so while there may not be as large a crowd as usual, there should be a good crowd and plenty of tip opportunities for performers. Plan on showing up around 7:00 or so. Read the rest of this entry »

Well, performers, we’re not sure what happened—despite the fact that the First Friday online schedule said that the FF gallery crawl was going to happen on July 4th, it didn’t. As for what did happen for the performers who showed up Friday night: I had heard through the New Raleigh blog that The Pit (a new, upscale barbeque restaurant in the old Nana’s Chophouse space on west Davie Street) was having an outdoor “block party” for the 4th, so Dan and I rounded up the performers and headed on over. Yes, Streetlight’s main work is promoting public performance and artistic expression by connecting with, encouraging, and facilitating the performances of up-and-coming street performers and artists (and if you don’t know what it means for an artist to perform, just watch Dan Nelson the next time he’s at First Friday or during SparkCon). Raleigh Street Performer Guidelines This PDF is an excerpt from the Downtown Raleigh Urban Design Handbook. Streetlight performers are subject to everything in this handbook except the permit purchase procedure–Streetlight takes care of that for you (and for less money)! Also note that your Streetlight permit covers a calendar year, not the July 1 - June 30 period mentioned in the handbook. Read the rest of this entry »
